New for 2023 is our Delph Star Performane feature. Each weekend, our three senior captains will reflect on the weekend action and choose the player who deserved recognition
This weekend was a mixed bag for first, second and third teams. The 1XI - led by Nathan Jones eased home in a gritty home win against Armitage Bridge (who joined us in being relegated last year). Nathan chose Adnan Ghani as his Star Man, an obvious candidate who clinically removed the visitors’ sting with a brilliant opening bowling spell removing openers Chris Dennison and Alex Blagbrough for just 1 run apiece. He went on to take 4-16 from his 9 overs as Bridge were bowled out for 79. Adnan is sponsored by AC Tyres.
The second’s didn’t fare as well away at the same side, coming out the wrong side of a 5-wicket loss. Jason Leaver opted for Callum Sykes and said “It’d have to be Cal for his match-saving innings”. Coming in at 46-6 to join his skipper at the crease, the talented youngster smacked a belligerent 51 from 38 deliveries to give our bowlers something positive to bowl at. It wasn’t to be in the end as Bridge paced their chase well and negotiated our slow bowlers effectively enough to ride out three wicket winners. Callum has five sponsors; Darren & Lyndsay Stott, HPE Engineering, Danny Spurr, Wendy Sykes and Alan at The White Lion.
Finally, new thirds captain Archie Davis enjoyed a pleasing success in his first match at home to Micklehurst seconds. Archie’s choice was 17-year-old all-rounder Will Potts who made a key contribution with both bat and ball. He claimed 2-12 in the first innings as Micklehurst were dismissed for 87 and then carried his bat for 27no to guide us to a relatively comfortable 88-2 in reply. Pottsy has three sponsors; Oldfield Construction, Mr & Mrs Harris and Steve Appleby.
Well done to Adnan, Callum and Will this weekend!
